Over the next week and a bit after the birth of Coby, the midwife visited on three more occasions. The purpose was to obviously check up on Kelly and Coby.
The first visit happened on the following Saturday after the birth. She checked over them both and they were found to be doing really well. Coby had dropped a bit of weight, which was normal, but was still well within safe levels as he had only dropped half of the weight he was allowed to drop. This meant that he had been feeding really well. Coby’s belly button was also drying up very well, and quite quickly, and his little foot was starting to show signs of improvement with it starting to move back into a more normal position. Kelly was found to be doing really well also as her uterus was shrinking really well and quite quickly, which is why she was getting a lot of pains during feeding. So all was good on the first visit.
Mandy the midwife came again on the Monday. This was mainly to do the heel prick test on Coby, where blood was drawn to be sent off to be checked. He cried a lot to begin with but calmed down soon after it was done. We also asked her to check his belly button as the belly button clamp had come off on Sunday, but all was OK with it. When his belly button clamp did come off, it disappeared around the back of him and made us wonder where it had gone!! His foot was also a bit better again. His weight had also increased back up to his birth weight, which was really good. It was no wonder really as he is a right guzzler when he feeds!! 😉
Her final visit was on the Friday, which was 9 days after the birth. This was to be the last visit from her as she then discharged us into the care of a health visitor. It was a real shame as Mandy was really nice. The visit this time was to just do the normal checks on Kelly and Coby. Kelly was fine as usual, and Coby was fine as well. He had put on a few more ounces and was now over his birth weight and weighing at about 8lbs 6oz. The only issue we had was that his belly button was weeping a bit and there was still a bit of core showing. We were told to keep an eye on it and to contact the GP if we were starting to get worried about it. Everything else was fine and Mandy wished us the best for the future. We gave her a card and some chocolates to show our appreciation of how great she was, but it was a real shame that she couldn’t carry on instead of the health visitor.
